HTU RECEIVES AUTOMATIC WEATHER STATION FROM AFRICA CLIMATE AI

Ho Technical University (HTU) has received a state-of-the-art automatic weather station from Africa Climate AI (AfriClimate AI), marking a significant milestone in the University’s pursuit of excellence in climate research and sustainability.

Africa Climate AI is a grassroots, non-profit initiative dedicated to harnessing artificial intelligence to tackle climate challenges across the African continent. Founded in September 2023 during the Deep Learning Indaba in Accra, Ghana, the organization emerged from a shared vision among African researchers and technologists to bridge the gap between AI innovation and climate resilience.

The donation was facilitated by Ing. Benjamin Wullobayi Dekongmen, a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Engineering at HTU, when he attended the recent AfriClimate AI conference, the ‘ Deep Learning Indaba 2025’ in Kigali, Rwanda.

At a brief ceremony held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ben Honyenuga received the equipment on behalf of the university. He described the donation as a timely enhancement to HTU’s research infrastructure, noting that the weather station will support teaching, data collection, and research in meteorology and climate science. “This facility positions HTU to contribute meaningfully to regional climate data, informing agriculture, industry, and sustainability efforts,” he said.

Prof. Honyenuga commended Ing. Dekongmen for his honesty and initiative in securing and declaring the donation, urging other faculty members to emulate such integrity. He further directed the immediate installation of the equipment to ensure its timely integration into academic and research activities.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Mensah, emphasized the importance of proper maintenance to preserve the equipment’s lifespan and functionality. Dean of Engineering, Prof. Maxwell Akple, highlighted the cross-departmental benefits of the station, noting its relevance beyond Agricultural Engineering to other units within the faculty.

Ing. Dekongmen expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, university management, his Dean, and Head of Department for their support and encouragement. He pledged to continue lobbying for additional resources to strengthen HTU’s research and community engagement.

Also, present were the Registrar, Dr. Christopher Amehoe, alongside Deans, Directors, and other university functionaries.
