Ho Technical University (HTU) on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, has joined the nation in observing the National Sanitation Day with a massive cleanup exercise on campus. The event, which began at the forecourt of the Basement of the G.M Afeti Auditorium at 6:00 a.m., brought together members of the University community in their numbers to support the cause.
The exercise, which falls in line with the national call to action on sanitation, reflected the University’s long-standing commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
The Registrar, Dr. Christopher Amehoe, acknowledged the strong turnout of staff and emphasised the University’s reputation as a leading institution in sanitation concerns globally and noted that, commemorating the day is an opportunity to add further value to the already beautiful campus environment.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Honyenuga, stressed that, as a technical university with environmental sustainability as a core value, HTU could not remain aloof while such an important day was being marked in the Ho Municipality. He reminded staff that cleanliness begins at home and urged them to take personal responsibility for their immediate surroundings rather than expecting others to do it. According to him, many of the health challenges facing society today emanate from environmental neglect, hence the importance of such an exercise.
He further highlighted that, HTU’s recognition as the number one university in Ghana under the Green Metrics Ranking, placed a higher responsibility on the institution to live up to expectations. He encouraged the University community to rethink waste disposal practices in more sustainable ways, reinforcing that human survival is ultimately dependent on the environment.
The Director of Works and Physical Development, Dr. Nicholas Awagah, outlined the activities for the day which included sweeping and collecting refuse in public areas, desilting of drains, clearing and weeding of overgrown lawns, trimming of hedges, and other beautification works.
In addition, management undertook a tree planting exercise, further advancing the University’s role in the Green Ghana agenda and reinforcing the strong link between environmental cleanliness and sustainable greening initiatives.

The event, not only deepened the culture of sanitation within the University but also highlighted the institution’s proactive steps towards contributing to national development goals on environmental health and sustainability.
Faculty and staff expressed their gratitude to Management for providing leadership in the exercise and reaffirmed their optimism for a cleaner Ghana. They extended appreciation to H.E. John Dramani Mahama for reviving the National Sanitation Day initiative and encouraged one another to remain committed to maintaining clean environments wherever they find themselves.
