Ho Technical University (HTU) on Friday, February 20, 2026, held its 33rd Matriculation Ceremony at the G.M. Afeti Auditorium, formally welcoming 3,891 newly admitted students—comprising 2,321 males and 1,538 females—into the HTU fraternity out of a total of 5,677 applications received.
The colourful event held at the G.M. Afeti Auditorium, was conducted in two sessions: the first session featured the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Built and Natural Environment, and Faculty of Art and Design, while the second session involved the School of Graduate Studies, HTU Business School, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Applied Social Sciences. Significantly, two physically challenged students also matriculated, underscoring the university’s commitment to inclusiveness and equal opportunity.
The Registrar, Dr. Christopher K. Amehoe, administered the Matriculation Oath, after which the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga, pronounced the freshmen full members of the university community.
In his address, Prof. Honyenuga congratulated the matriculants on their admission into what he proudly described as one of Ghana’s leading technical universities. He emphasized that matriculation was not a mere ritual but a defining milestone in their academic journey, urging students to reflect on the oath they had taken and allow it to guide their conduct and aspirations.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted HTU’s rising global recognition, noting that the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2025) listed HTU among the top five universities in Ghana, while EduRank (2025) ranked it the best technical university in the country. He further cited the Green Metric World University Rankings (2025), which placed HTU first in Ghana and second in West Africa for sustainability. He urged students to embrace environmental consciousness by reducing the use of plastics, adopting reusable bowls and water bottles, and respecting the university’s green environment. “Saving the environment is saving human health,” he emphasized.
The Vice-Chancellor reminded students that their time at HTU required discipline, focus, hard work, effective time management, and respect for authority. He cautioned that freedom without responsibility could lead to failure, urging them to attend lectures faithfully, participate actively in practical sessions, and engage in research, innovation, and co-curricular activities.
He also encouraged them to join extracurricular groups such as the University Choir, Cadet Corps, Pitching Clubs, and Sports Teams to enrich their university experience. He warned against indecent dressing, social vices, and unsafe practices on campus, charging lecturers to dismiss students who appear inappropriately dressed for lectures. He also advised students to be cautious on social media, reminding them that inappropriate posts could have lasting consequences.
On entrepreneurship and digital literacy, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the importance of skills acquisition in an era dominated by automation and artificial intelligence. He described digital skills as “survival skills” and noted that HTU’s Learning Management System had been integrated into teaching and learning to prepare students as responsible digital citizens.
As part of the ceremony, Miss Virginia Elikplim Senayah from the Faculty of Art and Design and Miss Alice Sefenu of the HTU Business School delivered the Matriculation Expectation Speeches on behalf of their colleagues in the first and second sessions respectively. They outlined the expectations of their mates to receive quality education and career mentorship, while pledging to uphold good behaviour and abide by the university’s rules and regulations.
Also in attendance were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Mensah, alongside Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments, who joined in welcoming the new students.
The 33rd Matriculation Ceremony was thus a dignified occasion, marking the beginning of a new academic journey for the fresh students, and setting them on a path of innovation, discipline, and sustainability in line with HTU’s vision.
