TWO PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED STUDENTS RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM BENEVOLENT GROUP

A benevolent group has extended support to two physically-challenged students at the University. Yorm Komla Agbogbo and Isaac Abor, both first-year ICT students, received a wheelchair and a cash token each from the group.

Mr. George Etornam Amenyo, a member of the social group known as ‘April Borns’, presented the items to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Honyenuga, who later presented them to the recipients on Thursday, August 9, 2023. The kind gesture was prompted by an appeal from Dr. Elizabeth Obinnim, a member of the group and also the Dean of Student Affairs.

Dr. Obinnim noticed the challenges that Yorm and Isaac faced while moving around the campus, and thus sought support on their behalf. The Vice-Chancellor expressed his gratitude to the donors for their generosity, which complements the University’s ongoing efforts to enhance student welfare.

While handing over the wheelchairs to the students, the Vice-Chancellor praised the Dean for her considerate approach and encouraged all staff members to identify and utilize similar opportunities that can benefit students. He also tasked the Directorate of Works and Physical Development cover open drains to facilitate the smooth movement of wheelchair users. Additionally, he urged the Timetable Committee to schedule classes for physically challenged students on the ground floors.

Both Yorm and Isaac expressed great relief upon receiving the wheelchairs and cash token. Isaac shared the challenges he faced while moving around with crutches, while Yorm revealed that he had been using a borrowed wheelchair. They both extended their appreciation to the donors and the University administration for their unwavering support.
