HTU Tops Sustainability Rankings in Ghana, Climbs West Africa

Ho Technical University (HTU) has reaffirmed its position as Ghana’s leading sustainable university while making significant strides on the continental stage in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

HTU retained its enviable spot as 1st in Ghana, standing tall as the nation’s most sustainable institution.

On the continental front, the University surged to 40th in Africa out of 97 institutions, improving from 50th last year. Even more striking is its leap in West Africa, where HTU now ranks 2nd, a rise from 7th place in 2024.

The University also distinguished itself in Setting & Infrastructure, where it was ranked 2nd in Africa. This recognition underscores HTU’s commitment to green spaces, health and safety facilities, and sustainability-focused infrastructure. HTU’s progress reflects Ghana’s growing presence in the global sustainability movement.

By leading nationally and climbing regionally, HTU is not only benchmarking itself against global peers but also setting the pace for West African institutions in integrating sustainability into higher education.

The UI GreenMetric Chairperson, Dr. Vishnu Juwono, noted that the rankings highlight “measurable action and collective learning” ⁴across campuses worldwide. HTU’s rise embodies this vision, showing that sustainability is not just an aspiration but a responsibility translated into policies, programmes, and outcomes.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga iterated that retaining the position as Ghana’s most sustainable University while making significant gains in Africa and West Africa affirms that the University is working in the right progressive direction.

“Our progress reflects the conscientious investments in sustainable infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and a culture that places sustainability at the heart of teaching, research, and community engagement”, he indicated.

He added that being ranked among the top institutions in Africa for green or sustainable environment underscore the University’s commitment to creating a safe, green, and future-ready campus and urged all stakeholders to place premium in sustainable environmental practices as the potential to reverse adverse climatic changes around us.
