The Solar Technology Application Resource Centre (STAR-C) at Ho Technical University (HTU) has been officially inaugurated on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, marking a major breakthrough in Ghana’s transition to renewable energy.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga, expressed his delight at the establishment of the centre and assured of the University’s commitment to championing solar technology transfer and adoption. He noted that the centre would offer various services, including capacity building, testing and standardization, and innovation and knowledge management. These services will support the adoption of solar energy technologies, enhance quality infrastructure, and build local capacities in solar energy.

He acknowledged the critical support received throughout the project’s development. He expressed gratitude to the then Minister of Energy, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for approving HTU to host the centre, and to the current Minister of Energy for overseeing its completion. Furthermore, he commended the faculty and staff of the Department of Engineering for their dedication and hard work in bringing this project to fruition.

Mr. Saba Kalam, Programme Specialist at International Solar Alliance, highlighted the importance of harnessing solar energy to drive sustainable economic development. He encouraged HTU to utilize the centre to its full potential, fostering knowledge sharing and innovation in solar energy technologies.

He also noted that Ghana’s abundant sunlight presents a significant opportunity for the country to transition to renewable energy, and expressed excitement about the potential impact of STAR-C.

Mr. Mohammed Hayle, Managing Director, Hayle Baris Energy Solutions, emphasized the centre’s role in bridging the gap in solar energy expertise. He noted that the centre will equip Ghanaians with the skills to design, install, and maintain solar systems, driving innovation and entrepreneurship in the renewable energy sector.

In his address, Deputy Minister Collins Adomako Mensah emphasized STAR-C’s potential to catalyze change in Ghana’s renewable energy sector. He noted that the centre is part of a global initiative to establish a network of solar technology and application resource centres.

The Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, encouraged all stakeholders to work together to advance solar technology and create a sustainable future. He expressed confidence that the Volta Region can become a leader in renewable energy innovation.

Other dignitaries present at the inauguration included Togbega Gabusu VII, Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Area, the Moderator of the E.P. Church, Ghana, Rt. Rev. Lt Col Bliss Divine Kofi Agbeko (rtd), as well as Management members, Deans, Directors, Heads of Department, and students of HTU.
