The Ho Technical University (HTU) Basic School has been recognised by the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) as a Nutrition-Friendly School, following its performance in the 2023 UNICEF-Ghana Education Service (GES) assessment.
The school earned a three-star rating out of a possible four, a commendation that highlights its dedication to child nutrition, hygiene, and healthy living.
Explaining the basis of the recognition, Ms. Alberta Fiakpui, Nutritionist at the HTU Clinic, said the programme, implemented in collaboration with UNICEF and GES, was designed to instill good feeding habits and wellness practices in school children.

She noted that activities such as Egg Day and Fruit Day, physical exercise sessions, and communal sanitation drives were central to the initiative. Pupils also received talks on exclusive breastfeeding, personal hygiene, and healthy living, which they were encouraged to share with their families. “The three-star rating is very good and reflects the dedication of both facilitators and pupils,” she remarked.
Headmistress Ms. Jemima Gidiglo further explained that the school institutionalized Nutrition Day every Wednesday, where children brought fruits to school for display and discussion. “We took this seriously because we realized the children need the nutrition. We are consistent with it, and that is why we had the award,” she said. She also encouraged both children and adults to embrace healthy eating, particularly by consuming fruits and eggs.

In recognition of the achievement, a plaque was presented to the school through Ms. Fiakpui, who formally handed it over to Ms. Gidiglo at a brief but symbolic ceremony on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. The presentation marked the culmination of years of consistent effort and underscored the collective commitment of staff, pupils, and partners to advancing child health and development.
