The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management of the Ho Technical University (HTU) on Monday, March 3, organised a day’s workshop on fire safety for its staff and students.
The workshop, which was facilitated by ADO I Daniel Marshall Kpoyi and his team from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), aimed at equipping participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to fire emergencies.
ADO I Kpoyi advised participants to ensure that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders are kept at a safe distance from heat sources, stored in well-ventilated areas, and regularly inspected for leaks.
He cautioned against modifying or tampering with cylinder parts, using expired LPG, and storing gas in enclosed spaces, and also advised participants to keep a safe distance between LPG cylinders and buildings, at least 20 feet, and avoid the use of phones near LPG cylinders.
The GNFS personnel also demonstrated how to properly use fire extinguishers, emphasizing the importance of selecting the right type of extinguisher for specific fires. Participants were taught the PASS method for using fire extinguishers: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.
Mr. Issifu Zakaria, Head of Security at HTU, also presented some campus security tips, advising participants to be aware of their surroundings, walk in groups, secure their property, report suspicious behaviour, and limit their personal information on social media.
The workshop was well-attended by staff and students of the Department, who expressed their appreciation for the valuable information and skills shared during the session.
