Fifty HTU Students Undergo Digital Skills Training

The Vice‑Chancellor of Ho Technical University (HTU), Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga, has officially opened a 12‑week Digital Skills Training Programme for 50 selected students, in collaboration with Plan International Ghana, with support from Nokia and Next Gen Infraco. 

The programme, launched on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the Digital Lab of the Computer Science Department, forms part of an ongoing partnership between HTU and Plan International Ghana for the establishment of a Digital Skills Centre, designed to enhance employability and entrepreneurial readiness among young people. 

In his address, Prof. Honyenuga lauded the partnership, emphasizing that the training reflects HTU’s mission to bridge the digital skills gap and prepare students for Ghana’s evolving digital economy. He noted that the programme would enrich the University’s curriculum and equip participants with competencies in emerging technologies such as 5G infrastructure. 

Prof. Honyenuga remarked: “Acquiring digital skills has become essential for academic advancement, enhancing entrepreneurship, improving employability, and driving national development. This Digital Skills training will increase digital skills acquisition, employability, and entrepreneurial engagement among young people to bridge the digital skills gap and usher them into the digital economy.” 

The Dean of Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Prof. Emmanuel Letsyo, commended the partners for supporting the upgrade of some laboratories in the department. He encouraged students to remain committed throughout the sessions, stressing that their active participation would be vital to the programme’s success. 

The Head of Department, Prof. John Coker Ayimah, welcomed participants to the orientation programme, underscoring the role of the Digital Skills Centre project in advancing employability and entrepreneurial engagement. 

Mr. Eric Ayuba, Programmes Manager, Plan International Ghana,  reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to the partnership, acknowledging Nokia’s funding support and Next Gen Infraco’s technical expertise as crucial to the success of the initiative. He also applauded the commitment of the Vice‑Chancellor and his Management team, saying their zeal would attract further partnership opportunities to strengthen the University’s digital transformation agenda. 

Present at the event were the Director of Works, Dr. Nicholas Awagah, Director of Academic Affairs, Mr. Isaac Meyir, the Ag. Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Francis Ganyaglo, lecturers of the Department, and officials of Plan International Ghana, including Ms. Ernestina Akakpo, Project Officer. 

Over the 12 weeks, participants will acquire cutting‑edge digital skills to strengthen their employability and entrepreneurial readiness.
