Head Librarian, Nunya Library

Mr Joseph Owusu Kwakye is the Head Librarian of the University Library, where he provides strategic leadership for the university library system and promotes access to quality academic and research resources. With extensive experience in library and information management, he has contributed significantly to the development of modern library services, digital access to information, and academic support systems within the university community.

Mr Kwakye is committed to advancing teaching, learning, and research through innovative library practices and user-centred services. Under his leadership, the library continues to strengthen its role as a hub for knowledge creation, scholarly engagement, and lifelong learning, supporting the university's vision and mission.

A Brief History

The Ho Technical University (HTU) library was established in 1969 as the Ho Technical Institute Library. It became the Ho Polytechnic Library in 1993 when the institution was upgraded to a polytechnic status. It is currently officially referred to as the Nunya Library.

The library has a seating capacity of about 500 users at a time. It houses 19,639 assorted titles of books embodying various texts for the core programmes run by the HTU.

The library is a member of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH) and provides access to several electronic resources to assist faculty, staff, and students.

To become a world-class library dedicated to the provision of relevant and credible information in support of teaching, learning and research for development.

Mission

To develop collections that facilitate teaching, learning, and research activities of the university. To provide a conducive environment for learning, creativity and intellectual growth. To provide faculty, staff and students easy access to information resources.

Focus

The library plays a vital role in supporting the intellectual pursuits of faculty, staff, and students, and the University community as a whole. The library serves as a gateway to our rich information resources, facilities and services. Thus, the library harnesses resources, facilities, and services geared towards achieving the University's academic excellence and research goals. The library also partners with other international and local libraries to meet the information needs of its patrons.

Recent Achievements

Expansion of access to digital resources through CARLIGH membership – providing access to electronic journals, databases, e-books, and scholarly materials
Procurement of 300 new pieces of furniture in 2025 to optimise the study environment
Ongoing professional development – three staff members pursuing Masters degrees, one staff member completed a PhD programme
Introduced a special Chocolate Day programme to welcome students and encourage library patronage
