FAWE, HTU DISCUSS SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT FOR FEMALE & DIFFERENTLY-ABLED STUDENTS

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ghana Chapter and Ho Technical University (HTU) commenced discussions on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, to provide scholarship support for students admitted into various study programmes at the University.

A delegation from FAWE Ghana visited the University to elaborate on the importance of the collaboration to students, FAWE, and Mastercard. They highlighted the current stage of FAWE Ghana’s collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation to implement a scholarship programme for young people interested in pursuing Higher National Diploma (HND) or 2-year programmes in STEM-related courses.

The Programme Manager at FAWE Ghana, Ms. Anna Nabere, underscored the intention to place special focus on differently-abled persons, which is paramount to their inclusivity and selection process. She revealed plans to award scholarships to approximately 34 or more individuals from the intervention regions who applied to HTU as part of the initiative. “It is very important to us to ensure we carry along persons with disabilities to also acquire higher education, especially in disciplines of their choosing,” she iterated.

Additionally, they outlined planned activities for beneficiaries after they report to the University and clarified the roles and responsibilities of FAWE Ghana and the University to ensure the smooth implementation of the programme.

In appreciating the delegation on the working visit, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga, expressed the University’s commitment to supporting the initiative. He assured the FAWE Ghana team that the Gender Affairs Office, led by Dr. Liticia Effah-Manu, would work directly with FAWE Ghana on the project. Prof. Honyenuga emphasized that the initiative aligns closely with the University’s commitment to gender inclusion.

He noted that the University is putting all necessary measures in place to ensure the comfort and well-being of the scholarship beneficiaries throughout their studies.These measures include orientation, ensuring safe and accessible accommodation, facilitating access to academic resources, and providing additional support services tailored to the needs of students, especially those with disabilities.

He reiterated the University’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that allows all students to thrive academically and personally.

FAWE further assured the University that they would provide additional assistance to scholarship beneficiaries by ensuring accessibility to the necessary resources and support required to successfully complete their studies.

The VC, on behalf of Management, expressed gratitude to FAWE Ghana and the Mastercard Foundation for their efforts in supporting students and pledged the University’s full cooperation to ensure the programme’s success.

Present at the meeting were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, Deans, and Directors of the University.
