The Gender Affairs Office of the University on Friday, March 8, organised a forum to commemorate the 2024 International Women’s Day on the theme, “Count Her In: Accelerating Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment.”
The Guest Speaker, Dr. Mrs. Loretta Sarpong, a prominent advocate for women’s rights and gender equality, highlighted the day as an opportunity to reflect on the progress made by women in striving fearlessly for equality and empowerment.
She emphasised the transformative impacts of courageous women, leaders, and change-makers from various backgrounds in shaping today’s world. “International Women’s Day should signify women’s commitment to creating a world where every woman’s potential is fully realised,” she stated.
She stressed that economic empowerment is crucial, citing its ripple effects as a catalyst for women’s advancement and liberation. Dr Sarpong called for investment in women’s education, mentorship, networking, and prioritisation of gender-responsive policies to level the playing field for women.
Dr. Liticia Effah-Manu, the Gender Affairs Officer, emphasised the need for deliberate actions to “count women in,” including providing quality education, ensuring equal pay and benefits, promoting representation in decision-making, and implementing affirmative actions.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ben Honyenuga acknowledged women’s indispensable roles in societal and national development, pledging continuous efforts towards gender parity. He commended the Gender Affairs Office for spearheading gender mainstreaming efforts of the University.
The celebration, chaired by Dr. Elizabeth Obinnim, Dean of Student Affairs, brought together staff, students, and young girls from selected schools. Performances by the HTU Basic School Drama group, first year students of the University and the Staff Welfare Borborbor group added vibrancy to the occasion.
Meanwhile, ahead of the event, the Gender Affairs Office and the Sports and Recreation Unit organised a health walk and recreational games for staff on March 6 to herald International Women’s Day.
