HTU Gender Office Marks World Menstrual Hygiene Day with Learners at Shia

The Gender Advocacy and Inclusion Office of Ho Technical University, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, joined the global commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day with learners of Shia R.C. and E.P. Basic Schools in the Ho Municipality.

The event, observed under the theme, “Together for a Period Friendly World, was organised with support from female staff of HTU and the local chapter of Women in Engineering, underscored the University’s commitment to advancing gender advocacy and promoting wellness among young learners.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Liticia Effah-Manu, the Gender Advocacy Officer, reaffirmed HTU’s dedication to empowering young girls through continuous education on menstrual health and personal hygiene. She explained that the initiative forms part of the University’s broader mission to promote inclusion and wellness among school children.

The outreach featured teaching and demonstration sessions facilitated by Ms. Ivy Adzo Kumah, a Midwife at the HTU Clinic, who engaged students on healthy menstrual practices and body care. More than 100 learners participated in the exercise, which combined health education with interactive activities. Students also staged a drama on proper hygiene practices, highlighting the importance of cleanliness and self-care during menstruation.

Following the health demonstration, Dr. Ing. Mrs. Patricia Asantewaa Tannor, Patron of Women in Engineering, made a submission encouraging the students to embrace confidence and discipline in their personal hygiene. She stressed that menstrual health education is vital for the empowerment of young girls and pledged the continued support of Women in Engineering in similar outreach initiatives.

To further support their personal hygiene needs, female students received sanitary pads and toiletries, equipping them with essential items to practice proper menstrual care.

The occasion was graced by Mamaga Yibor Amegavieso II, Queen Mother of the Avenor Traditional Area and Regional Manager for Catholic Schools in the Volta and Oti Regions. She encouraged the students to maintain confidence, cleanliness and good personal hygiene during menstruation, stressing the need for continuous menstrual health education among school children.

Participants expressed appreciation to the organisers, noting that the programme had equipped them with practical knowledge on menstrual care. The Assistant Headmistress of Shia R.C. Basic Primary and JHS, Ms. Beatrice Ahorlu, conveyed gratitude to the HTU team for their dedication to the welfare of the students.
