A four-day Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Workshop on assessment and test item development in higher education has commenced at at University under the auspices of the Directorate of Planning and Quality Assurance (DPQA).
The training runs from Tuesday, 25th August to Friday, 28th August 2026.
Opening the programme, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Mensah, emphasized that assessment is central to quality education. He cautioned that weak assessment systems compromise student learning outcomes and institutional reputation, and underscored the importance of continuous professional development for faculty members, many of whom transition into academia from industry or research backgrounds without formal pedagogical training.
Welcoming participants, the Director of Planning and Quality Assurance, Dr. Edward Ayimey, described the workshop as a vital step in equipping staff with contemporary approaches to assessment design and test item construction that are valid, reliable, and outcome-based. He noted that rigorous assessment ensures students acquire the competencies and practical skills needed for the job market.
The training brings together staff from across the University’s academic decisions, as well as the Directorates of Academic Affairs and Planning and Quality Assurance.
The workshop is being facilitated by Dotles Education Services, led by seasoned experts including Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, Executive Chairman of Dotles Group, former Dean of the Faculty of Art at KNUST, and former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES); Prof. Kafui Etsey of the Department of Education and Psychology, University of Cape Coast, specializing in educational assessment, statistics, measurement, evaluation, and qualitative research methods; and Mr. Fred Kofi Amu, IT and Edutech Consultant, focusing on education technology, assessment, and digital marking systems.
This initiative underscores HTU’s commitment to credible examination processes and academic excellence aligned with international standards.
