The academic partnership between Ho Technical University and the Supply Application School of the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) has been set in motion with the inaugural matriculation of 17 navy sailors for the Cook Steward Second Class Advance Certificate Course on Monday, October 30, 2023.

The short  but colourful ceremony took place at the NAVTRAC School of Maritime Operations auditorium at Nutekpor and was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Honyenuga, along with the Registrar, Dr. Christopher Amehoe, and other University officials.

The 14 female and 3 male students subscribed to the matriculation oath in the presence of Commodore Bright Atiayao, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), and other officers of the Naval Training Command.

In his address, the VC expressed enthusiasm about the inaugural Matriculation Ceremony for students from the Supply Application School (SAS) of the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), symbolizing the collaborative effort between NAVTRAC and HTU, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed on June 13, 2023.

He welcomed the 17 navy sailors to the rights and privileges of HTU students and assured them of joining a reputable academic community with qualified staff and facilities, urging them to use the opportunity wisely for academic and professional growth.

Acknowledging the busy schedules of naval men and women, the VC underscored the importance of self-discipline in balancing military duties and academic responsibilities.

Prof. Honyenuga also commended the Ghana Naval Training Command for its commitment to personnel development and expressed optimism about the partnership’s prospects, emphasizing shared values and goals and looking forward to future matriculation ceremonies.

On his part, the FOC, Commodore Atiayao described the event as a historic moment for the Ghana Navy and the Supply Application School, marking the beginning of a new chapter for sailors focusing on culinary skills and hospitality. He noted that the collaboration with HTU reflects the commitment to creating well-trained naval forces capable of safeguarding Ghana’s maritime domain.

 The Commanding Officer emphasized the importance of the collaboration, saying the goal was not only to prepare students for their current roles in the Navy but also for a successful career after their service, urging the students to work hard and live up to the confidence placed in them.

He expressed gratitude to the University Management for their visionary support and assured of their commitment to the implementation of the MoU.

 The 12-week advance certificate course will be run by the Supply Application School under the tutelage of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
