Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ben Honyenuga on Friday, August 7, 2026, toured the Demonstration Farm of the Department of Agricultural Science & Technology, reaffirming management’s commitment to practical, competency-based training in agriculture.
During the visit, Prof. Fafa Egbadzor, Associate Professor in the Department and Director of Research and Innovation, briefed the Vice-Chancellor that students were actively engaged in land preparation, seed nursing, planting, harvesting, and marketing of crops. He emphasized that these processes are designed to ensure students translate classroom theory into practical skills.
Dr. Asiwome Mensah Akumah, Head of Department, explained that the land had undergone treatment to improve its fertility, thereby enhancing crop performance. He also outlined challenges confronting the project, including theft of produce, insect pest infestations, and the need to maximize the use of the greenhouse facility. Despite these hurdles, crops such as cabbage, spring onion, lettuce, and pepper have been successfully cultivated, showcasing the farm’s potential as a training ground for agribusiness and sustainable food production.
Prof. Honyenuga expressed excitement about the demonstration farm as a model of competency-based training, noting its ability to improve soil fertility and crop yields. He urged that the project should move beyond experimentation into mass vegetable production for the larger market, making full use of the vast land available. He further directed the Department of Agricultural Engineering to design a basic greenhouse facility and other equipment needed to support farming activities, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainability.
Prof. Honyenuga also commended the faculty, staff, and farm technician Mr. Agbenyegah Amese for their dedication and commitment, urging them to sustain their efforts in advancing practical agricultural education.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by Dr. Nicholas Awagah, Director of Works and Physical Development; Mr. Francis Ganyaglo, Acting Director of Public Affairs; and Mr. Issifu Zakaria, Head of Security.
Their presence underscored management’s collective support for initiatives that strengthen practical training and prepare students to contribute meaningfully to national development.
