IWD2025: WOMEN URGED TO PUSH BEYOND OBSTACLES TO ACHIEVE LEADERSHIP

Prof. Mrs. Ibok Nsa Oduro, former Provost of the College of Science at KNUST, has emphasized the importance of gender equity and the need for a level playing field for women in leadership during a forum organized by the University to mark International Women’s Day.

Speaking on the theme “Beyond Joining the Train: Accelerating Action on Embracing Gender Equitable Leadership,” Prof. Oduro acknowledged the challenges that hinder women from rising to leadership positions, but urged them to push beyond these obstacles.

The forum, organized by the University’s Gender Affairs Office, brought together faculty, students, and professionals to discuss proactive measures for fostering gender-balanced leadership in academia and beyond.

Prof. Oduro commended HTU’s Management, for the institution’s progress in supporting women in leadership. She praised the University’s initiatives aimed at empowering women and called for continuous efforts to ensure gender-equitable policies and structures.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ben Honyenuga pledged to empower women in leadership, emphasizing the University’s commitment to gender equity. “We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that encourages women to assume leadership positions and equips them with tools and resources to drive innovation,” he stated.

Prof. Honyenuga encouraged the university community to participate in initiatives supporting gender-equitable leadership.

Dr. Liticia Effah-Manu, Gender Affairs Officer, highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, aligning with the British Council project addressing the underrepresentation of female STEM lecturers in leadership positions across Ghana’s technical universities.

The forum, chaired by Dr. Otilia Adzinyo, Head of the Hospitality and Tourism Management Department, featured cultural performances by students of the HTU Basic School, adding a vibrant touch to the event. It concluded with a panel discussion, where participants shared insights on challenges and progress in gender equity.

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8 to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
