Ho Technical University (HTU) has on Friday, July 17, 2026, commissioned its University Infant Care Centre (UICC). The facility, is expected to provide quality childcare services for infants of staff and student parents, enabling them to pursue their academic and professional responsibilities with greater peace of mind.
Delivering the welcome address, the Gender Affairs Officer, Dr. Leticia Effah-Manu, described the establishment of the Centre as a significant investment in the University’s greatest asset; its people. She commended the University’s gender-responsive management for its unwavering commitment to transforming the vision of a child-friendly campus into reality, noting that the facility demonstrates HTU’s commitment to inclusion through practical action rather than policy alone.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga, expressed appreciation to the University Council, and Management for their collective efforts which made the project a reality. He explained that the UICC is aligned with the University’s 2023–2027 Strategic Plan, reflecting HTU’s commitment to enhancing teaching and learning, strengthening institutional development, enriching student experience and investing in sustainable infrastructure that promotes the welfare of the University community.
Prof. Honyenuga described the Centre as more than a childcare facility, saying it represents the University’s investment in the future by providing a safe, secure and professionally managed environment where infants and toddlers can thrive. He noted that the facility will enable staff and student parents to focus on their academic and professional responsibilities, knowing their children are receiving quality care, and urged users to maintain the Centre to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety and professionalism.
Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi, stressed that a university cannot nurture academic excellence while overlooking the welfare needs of its own community. She observed that the facility removes barriers that often limit the full participation of staff and student parents, particularly women, thereby promoting inclusion, productivity and equal opportunity. Prof. Dzisi further assured the University community that the Centre has been built to the required standards and will be operated by trained caregivers to provide quality care for every child entrusted to it.
The Volta Regional Director of Education, Madam Marian Jemima Adzroe, commended HTU for the initiative, describing it as a bold step towards creating a more supportive and family-centred academic environment. She noted that the Centre contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on quality education and gender equality by reflecting the University’s commitment to building an inclusive campus that aligns with global best practices. She added that this commitment provides a worthy example for other institutions across the country.
Also addressing the gathering, the Director of Health, Dr. Redeemer Fiebor, assured the University community that the Health Directorate would provide continuous health support for the Centre through regular child health monitoring, immunisation and vaccination services. He indicated that the facility would become an extension of the Directorate’s healthcare services on campus and expressed optimism that it would grow into a comprehensive daycare system that complements the University’s educational structure. He further assured parents that their children would receive quality healthcare support in a safe and nurturing environment.
The commissioning of the UICC marks another milestone in HTU’s efforts to promote staff and student welfare while fostering an inclusive campus where academic excellence and family responsibilities can thrive side by side.
