The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Honyenuga, inaugurated the Health Services Management Committee of the University on Friday, August 18, 2023, under the chairmanship of Prof. Maxwell E. Azila-Gbettor.
Constituted in accordance with Schedule B 19 (1) of the University Statutes (August 2018), as amended, the HSMC comprises the Registrar, Dr. Christopher K. Amehoe, Director of Finance, Mr. Augustine K. Owusu, and the Medical Director, Dr. Redeemer S. Fiebor, as members.
Others include Prof. Maxwell Akple and Prof. Emmanuel Letsyo, Representatives of the Academic Board, Mr. John Tumaku, Representative of TUTAG, Theophilus Wegbe, Representative of TUSAAG, Ms. Edna Amega, Representative of TUAAG, Mr. Xornam Egbetorke, Representative of TEWU, and Mr. Divine Kodzi, Representative of TUWAG. In attendance at the Committee’s meetings will be the Dispensing Technician, Mr. Moses N. Piidro, and Administrative Assistant, Ms. Faith C. Avekor, who will serve as secretary to the committee. Representatives of the SRC and the Ghana Health Service will be included later when available.
The Vice-Chancellor administered oaths of office and secrecy to the members and charged them to fulfill their mandate, which includes formulating policies for the efficient administration of the University Clinic and implementing controls, including the sanitation of the University Campus. They are also to advise management on health matters concerning staff, students, and the general public, while submitting quarterly reports on health and sanitation-related issues to the Vice-Chancellor.
In his remarks, the VC encouraged the committee members to support the medical director in enhancing services at the Clinic, which has become the preferred choice for residents within the catchment area. He hinted of plans to expand facilities at the clinic, including the construction of a theater and additional wards. In addition, Management, he noted, was collaborating with the Ghana Health Service to boost staff strength, and roll out full laboratory services at the facility.
He also urged the committee to work on the modalities to implement the free health screening for staff, as previously announced by him.
Dr. Fiebor, the Medical Director, commended the University Management for constituting the committee, emphasizing its significance in the effective operation of the University health system. He urged members to focus on advancing preventative healthcare in the community beyond clinic management.
Rev. Fr. Winfred Sraha, Administrator, Keta-Akatsi Catholic Diocesan Health Services, who witnessed the ceremony, advised the members against using the committee to address union issues. Instead, he encouraged them to collaborate to ensure the smooth administration of health services in the University.
Prof. Azila-Gbettor, Chairman of the committee, accepted the responsibility bestowed on them on behalf of the members and pledged to work diligently to fulfill their mandate.
